An evening in two modes. Three Dr. Seuss books — Yertle the Turtle, Fox in Socks, and The Cat in the Hat — are staged straight, with no framing device and no wink: the text, the rhythm, and the pictures brought to life as written. Between them, an original song cycle interrupts to argue about the man behind the books. “I Do Not Like Dr. Seuss” makes the case for the prosecution. “Teddy Can Rhyme” looks past the pen name at Theodor Geisel. “Doctor in the House” takes a fantasy trip to heaven where Dr. Seuss is hopding forth. “I Can Read It All by Myself” closes on the children who learned to read from him and what they carried away. The stories stay innocent; the songs refuse to.
