My collaborator and colleague loved a good mystery. In 1996 he wanted to create a mystery with some kind of moral at the end. Quite frankly, it didn’t quite work. The story was difficult to follow and full of sarcasm, not great stuff for an elementary school production.
The songs were a mixed bag. The opening song was meant to clue the audience to the fact that this was a mystery (At The Key Club). The name “Key Club” was then anagrammed to become the name of a pivotal character (Hey, Buckley). Clever, huh? The following song paints the club as an honorable place, kind of like the Freemasons (Here In This Place). Then, the real mystery begins, and the knives come out. First, a song about how even your best friends can turn on you (Shark Attack), then one about living with no regard for others (Life Without Remorse). Finally, a non-ending of an ending with a redemptive, feel-good song (Heaven on Earth). I re-recorded the songs a few years ago. The script will be posted as soon as I can find a VHS recording.
