It is exciting to think that the date for the staged-readings of “Spirals and Dirt” is only 3 months away. I play this little mental game with myself where I reflect on a time span in the opposite direction. In this case, since the musical is basically 3 months in the future, I think back to 3 months in the past, to August 15, 2025. Quite frankly, that seems like a long time ago. Now, 3 months until the staged-readings seems like it is tomorrow!
On Fridays I attend a Writers’ Room, which is a group of writers getting together in a small room and silently writing for 3 hours with only a midway break. While there is no talking during the writing, at the beginning we do update the group on what we are working on. Since I joined this group they have heard me talk about my goal to enter the theater world. At first it was to be as a creator of theater pieces for young audiences and performers. However, it became apparent that it was not for me. I wanted a full-length production. It was fun to share the progress that has been made. Yesterday was interesting because there seemed to be a different level of respect for me and work. I think the others were surprised that this musical is actually going forward.
With the encouragement and support of one very, very important person, I began the process of combining elements from two musicals of mine. The resulting musical, (Spirals and Dirt) has been a labor of love ever since.
This week has been important for the producer, the director, and myself. We officially posted an audition call on Theater Bay Area, Backstage, Facebook, and Instagram, as well as at the theater department of our local college . By reviewing submitted resumes and performance media, we are now in the position to schedule in-person auditions on November 29. Following callbacks we will settle on cast, then rehearsals, then the staged readings! I can’t wait!
